I am Anita Marchesani, Ph.D. I am a Personal Coach, a Licensed Psychologist, and a Certified Fitness Trainer.

And I KNOW stress; I have experienced burnout. In fact, it happened to me very early on in my career. I had worked so hard to earn my doctorate in Clinical Psychology, I had developed a well respected program at a big name teaching hospital on the East Coast, and I had a very bright future ahead of me.

But then things started to change... and it happened slowly.

Over time, I found that I had to drag myself out of bed in order to get to work in the morning. I actually started HOPING that my patients would call to cancel their appointments with me. (I'm ashamed to admit that publically, but it is the ugly truth of not taking care of yourself – you eventually get to the point where you can't take care of others at all!)

I worked with medical patients who had severe physical problems, and my job was to help them develop coping strategies so that their pain and symptoms took less of a toll on their lives.

I was good at it – I spent my days lecturing and counseling my patients on the importance of taking care of themselves...

BECAUSE I noticed that the ONE COMMON THREAD among all my patients was that they lead a life of never caring for themselves, always putting others ahead of themselves (sound familiar???).

And guess what? I fell into the same trap of failing to relieve the stress of my life.

What happened? I completely burned out. I was:
Cynical ("Nobody really wants to get better.")
  Tired ("I have to force myself out of bed to get to work everyday lately.")
  Not as productive (My paperwork – which was admittedly never my strong point – dramatically fell off.)
  Irritable ("I can't believe this person is STILL complaining about this!")
  Not fulfilled like I used to be ("What I do doesn't matter; it doesn't make a difference to anyone or anything.")
     
Even if you are not that bad at this point, if you don't learn how to manage stress, you could find yourself exactly where I was!

And my solution was to QUIT my job! That's right, I just quit. Now, for therapists, it takes a year to close down a therapy practice, but I did it and was so relieved.

BUT I CAN'T LIE! It wasn't effortless to make changes in my life that supported my own physical and mental health – and reduce stress.  

HOWEVER, it was the most important thing I've ever done, and I have NEVER looked back!

My life is so much better now, so much healthier, more meaningful, and more focused. And I did it by using the same strategies that I taught my patients at the hospital to use, and now my coaching clients benefit from this same, effective program.

No more do I feel emotionally spent or so frazzled that I wonder how I'm going to make it to the end of the day.
